The Soul of My Feet

The soul is credited with the ability to bring consciousness to the body and is located in the pineal gland which is in the brain. The soul is the union of a God made spirit in a temporal body on earth. After death, the spirit continues to live and progress in the Spirit world until the resurrection, when it is reunited with the body that once housed it.

“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

Our body through its five senses contacts the visible, touchable, tangible things of the material world. It’s the most outward and visible part of our being, and by it, we exist and experience the things in the physical realm. But of course, we’re more than just a physical body.

Our soul is composed of our mind, which enables us to do things like think, reason, consider, remember, and wonder. It expresses our emotions, which enable us to have feelings like happiness, sorrow, anger, relief, and compassion. It also empowers our will, which enables us to choose and make decisions. Our mind, emotion, and will make up our soul, which is our personality; who we are within.

It is the actions of our soul, our conscious awareness, our ability to make the right decisions where we are judged by God.

However, at the center of our existence is our spirit, a part of us that’s deeper than our soul. Our spirit is the most hidden part of our being. By our spirit, we can connect with the spiritual realm. No other creature was created with this third part; the spirit. By our spirit, God is real to us and we can contact Him, receive Him, contain Him, and fellowship with Him.

God gave us a spirit because He wants to know us, to have a relationship with us, and even live in us. Our spirit was not only made by God, it was made for God.

“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” John 3:6

God desires that we would be vessels that contain and express Him. His purpose is to come into our spirit to fill it with Himself. When we believe in Jesus Christ, He comes to live in us as our new life. He is in our spirit as a new Person, so that He can be expressed through our entire being: spirit, soul, and body.

Before Christ died and became the conduit restoring our spirit to God, our soul was the leading part. We pretty much did everything by the thoughts and desires of our soul. We made decisions with our souls based on our own thoughts and our feelings. Whether we lived a good life or a bad life, a moral life, or an immoral life, we lived our lives in the soul.

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

From this verse, we can understand that the soul and the spirit are so close to one another that the two require the word of God to divide them, to separate them from each other.

Based on this verse alone, we can conclude that our soul and our spirit are not the same things. It is not only important for us to see that they are distinct components, but also to discern one from the other.

Our soul is basically who we are, our mind, our emotion, and our will. So the function of our soul is to express God.

“And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.” Luke 1: 46-47

Mary said that her soul magnified the Lord. To magnify something implies that something hidden is made large, or expressed for all to see. Mary’s spirit exalted God; then her soul magnified the Lord. Her praise to God issued from her spirit and was expressed through her soul. Her spirit was filled with joy in God her Savior, and her soul manifested that joy. She lived and was lead by the Spirit, which directed her soul.

Here we begin to see the answer to the question of whether it matters that the spirit and soul are different from each other. Mary magnified the Lord in her soul, but she first enjoyed and experienced Him in her spirit.

We should never try to express God starting from our soul alone. We can try to please Him by doing our best to be good and godly, but our attempt will always fall short of truly expressing God. This is because the true expression of God must come from our spirit, with God as its source and with our soul as its channel. This is what it means for us to express, and therefore magnify, the Lord.

“For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.” Romans 8:6-8

In this lies our problem. Christ becomes a mere resident in us, and not the property owner. This is because our soul refuses to relinquish its free will. Thus, inevitably resulting in our demise and eviction from the body into Hell.

So then God desires that once we receive Christ; our new life, our new person living in us, our spirit would become the leading part of our being, not our soul. When we live by our spirit, our soul begins to express God’s life, instead of our own.

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.” Romans 8:9-10

Every day, even every moment, we have a choice. We can live by the old, independent life of our soul, or we can live by Christ as the new life and Person in our spirit. We can choose to allow our spirit to be our leading part, using our will to turn our mind to our spirit to take control, allowing our emotions to be awakened and stirred to express our love for God.

We must always keep in mind that God became a man called Jesus Christ. Throughout His human existence, He expressed God fully. When we believe in Him, we have another source to live by, and that’s God Himself. We can live by this source through our spirit.

“That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Romans 8:4

I would caution us to always remember that the carnal mind, our soul, is an enemy of the spirit, and will always seek its glory, robbing God in us of a true relationship with our spirit. Our souls want to be recognized, acknowledged and most of all take all glory from the Spirit.

“For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;” Romans 1:9

God’s intention in giving us three parts, a spirit, soul, and body, was that we would be vessels to contain Him and express Him. By choosing to live by our spirit, our third part; our soul, and even our body will function together to fulfill God’s purpose.

The conclusion of the matter is this, they that are led by the spirit are the Sons of God, but if you are led by your soul it will lead you straight to the Lake of Fire. It is this person who’s destruction is gained by the “Soul Of Their Feet”.
